Tragic Farewell: Community Mourns the Loss of Jack Wayne Area

The community of Topeka, Kansas, is grappling with the heartbreaking news of the passing of Jack Wayne Area, who succumbed to mesothelioma on February 4, 2025, after nearly five years of a grueling battle with this aggressive cancer. At the age of 76, Jack’s life, marked by resilience and dedication to family, friends, and community, has left an indelible mark on those who knew him.

A Lifelong Journey

Born on August 18, 1948, in Soldier, Kansas, Jack grew up in a tight-knit family, the son of Claude Ray Area and Blanche Arlene (Haber) Area. His educational journey began at Soldier Rural High School, from which he graduated in 1966. Following his graduation, Jack proudly served in the United States Navy, where he was stationed on the U.S.S. Everett F. Larson during the Vietnam War from 1969 to 1970.

After his military service, Jack returned home and married his beloved wife, Mary Lou Frealy, on June 1, 1968. Together they would go on to celebrate over 57 years of marriage, with Jack being a supportive husband, father, and grandfather. He left behind two children, Robert (married to Angie) and Kristina (married to Nathan), and a legacy of ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, each of whom he cherished dearly.

A Multifaceted Career

Jack’s professional life was a testament to his versatility and strong work ethic. He spent many years in the upholstery industry, honing his skills as a craftsman. Subsequently, he ventured into the modular home market, where he spent over a decade before retiring in 2010. Known as a “jack of all trades,” Jack’s adeptness at a variety of projects showcased his adventurous spirit and passion for learning.

Passions Beyond Work

Outside of his professional commitments, Jack was a vibrant member of his community, actively participating in the Covered Wagons RV Club for over nine years. He loved nothing more than to explore the great outdoors and travel across the U.S. and abroad with Mary Lou, embracing life to its fullest and creating precious memories together.

Final Farewell

To honor his memory, a funeral service is scheduled for February 7, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Mercer Funeral Home, Holton, Kansas. Following the service, Jack will be laid to rest at the Holton Cemetery, where he will receive military honors for his service to the nation. Friends and family wishing to pay their respects can do so during the visitation on February 6, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the same location.

A Community in Mourning

As the community comes together to remember Jack Wayne Area, his loving spirit and dedication to family will continue to resonate. His struggle with mesothelioma serves as a poignant reminder of the risks associated with asbestos exposure, as the world continues to grapple with the ongoing implications of this dangerous substance.

Jack leaves behind a legacy of love, adventure, and relentless optimism, one that is sure to inspire those he leaves behind. Though he has departed from this world, his memories and the values he imparted will remain alive in the hearts of his family and friends forever.
