Documented asbestos exposure in Connecticut
We list only sites where asbestos is documented by a government agency or published research. Many other workplaces in Connecticut likely used asbestos-containing insulation and equipment, but we do not name a site unless we can point to a record.
Electric Boat shipyard (Groton)
In a 1983 health hazard evaluation, NIOSH studied 246 painters at the Electric Boat shipyard in Groton, chosen at random from 424 union painters. NIOSH reported that historical reports of overexposure to asbestos were common among workers who had been at the shipyard eight years or more, mainly during submarine overhaul and retrofit work, and that 164 of the painters (67%) said they had worked with or been exposed to asbestos there. Lung function measurements were associated with years of reported asbestos exposure. NIOSH noted that asbestos was being phased out as other insulation came into use.
Connecticut filing deadlines
| Claim | Deadline | Statute |
|---|---|---|
| Personal injury | 2 years | Conn. Gen. Stat. 52-584 |
| Wrongful death | 2 years | Conn. Gen. Stat. 52-555 |
Connecticut allows two years for personal injury (Conn. Gen. Stat. 52-584). Wrongful death claims must be brought within two years of the death and, under 52-555, no more than five years after the act or omission. Separately, 52-577c sets a two-year period, counted from when the injury or death was or reasonably should have been discovered, for injury or death caused by exposure to a hazardous chemical substance or pollutant released into the environment, and since 2015 it applies notwithstanding 52-555. Whether that section fits a particular asbestos claim is a question for a Connecticut lawyer.
Also note: Wrongful death: 2 years from death, and no more than 5 years from the act or omission.
Deadlines and discovery rules change and depend on the facts. Confirm them with a lawyer licensed in Connecticut. Compare other states in our national table.

I painted submarines, not pipes. Could I have been exposed?
NIOSH's Groton study was of painters, and two-thirds of them reported working with or around asbestos at the shipyard. Trades often worked side by side in tight spaces. Describe your actual tasks and surroundings to your doctor and any lawyer.
