Documented asbestos exposure in New Jersey
We list only sites where asbestos is documented by a government agency or published research. Many other workplaces in New Jersey likely used asbestos-containing insulation and equipment, but we do not name a site unless we can point to a record.
Vermiculite in Hamilton Township and Edgewater
Vermiculite mined at Libby, Montana, was contaminated with asbestos. The federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) studied 28 sites around the country that processed it, and two were in New Jersey. The Zonolite Company, later W.R. Grace, plant in Hamilton Township (Mercer County) processed Libby vermiculite from 1948 to the early 1990s, with invoices showing roughly 205,000 tons. ATSDR noted reports of children playing in or near rail cars of vermiculite at the Hamilton site. The Celotex plant in Edgewater (Bergen County), the only gypsum board plant among the 28 sites, used Libby vermiculite from about 1967 to 1969.
The Asbestos Dump Superfund site in Millington (Morris County)
EPA's Asbestos Dump Superfund site consists of an 11-acre property in Millington and three separate satellite sites, including a 12-acre site on White Bridge Road and a 30-acre site in New Vernon. EPA's five-year reviews track the cleanup and its long-term protection.
