A vermiculite plant in Dearborn (Wayne County)
Vermiculite mined at Libby, Montana, was contaminated with asbestos. The federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) studied 28 sites around the country that processed it. The Zonolite Company, later W.R. Grace, plant in Dearborn processed Libby vermiculite from the early 1950s to 1989, with an estimated 15 to 25 employees at a time and invoices showing roughly 206,000 tons. ATSDR noted several reports of children playing on waste rock piles there. After community reports, EPA contacted more than 1,000 people living within half a mile, inspected 169 homes, and sampled 23 properties; asbestos was not detected in the residential yard samples.
Michigan filing deadlines

|---|---|---|
| Personal injury | 3 years | MCL 600.5805(2) |

Michigan allows three years after the death or injury for actions to recover damages for injury or for a death (MCL 600.5805(2)). If a person dies before their deadline runs out, MCL 600.5852 can give the estate's personal representative additional time.

I lived near the Dearborn plant. Was I exposed?
EPA's sampling did not find asbestos in residential yards, but past exposure while the plant operated is harder to measure. Tell your doctor about where you lived and any contact with the site.
