Documented asbestos exposure in Illinois
We list only sites where asbestos is documented by a government agency or published research. Many other workplaces in Illinois likely used asbestos-containing insulation and equipment, but we do not name a site unless we can point to a record.
The Johns Manville site in Waukegan (Lake County)
EPA's Johns Manville Corp. Superfund site in Waukegan includes a former manufacturing property of about 350 acres, with an asbestos waste disposal area of about 150 acres. About 3 million cubic yards of off-specification products and wastewater sludge were disposed of there. Johns Manville stopped operating at the site in the summer of 1998, and the manufacturing buildings were demolished in 2000 and 2001. Most cleanup work is complete.
A vermiculite plant in West Chicago (DuPage County)
Vermiculite mined at Libby, Montana, was contaminated with asbestos. The federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) studied 28 sites around the country that processed it. W.R. Grace's plant in West Chicago processed Libby vermiculite from 1974 to the early 1990s, with an estimated 15 to 35 employees at a time. Invoices show roughly 274,000 tons shipped there in under 15 years.
