A vermiculite plant in Spokane

Vermiculite mined at Libby, Montana, was contaminated with asbestos. The federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) studied 28 sites around the country that processed it. One was the Vermiculite Northwest plant, later owned by W.R. Grace, in Spokane, which processed Libby vermiculite from the 1940s to 1974 with an estimated 21 employees at a time.

We are researching other documented sites in Washington, including shipyards, and will add them only when we can cite a government or published record.

Common questions

Does Washington have an asbestos-specific deadline?

We have not found one in the statutes we reviewed. Washington uses its general three-year period, and courts decide when the clock starts. A Washington lawyer can apply this to your dates.

This page is general information, not legal advice. Laws and deadlines differ by state and change; confirm anything that matters with a licensed attorney in your state. No one can promise how a claim will turn out.
