Mesothelioma and asbestos exposure in Louisiana

Louisiana's documented record includes a New Orleans-area plant that processed asbestos-contaminated vermiculite. Louisiana's legal system is different from other states, and its deadlines changed in 2024. Louisiana has no NCI-designated cancer center, so this page lists the closest ones.

Last reviewed October 28, 2026 against the sources listed at the end of this page.

Documented asbestos exposure in Louisiana

We list only sites where asbestos is documented by a government agency or published research. Many other workplaces in Louisiana likely used asbestos-containing insulation and equipment, but we do not name a site unless we can point to a record.

A vermiculite plant in the New Orleans area

Vermiculite mined at Libby, Montana, was contaminated with asbestos. The federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) studied 28 sites around the country that processed it. The Zonolite Company, later W.R. Grace, plant listed by ATSDR for New Orleans processed Libby vermiculite from about 1965 to 1989 with an estimated 8 to 12 employees at a time; invoices show roughly 148,000 tons received.

Louisiana filing deadlines

Claim Deadline Statute
Personal injury 2 years La. Civ. Code art. 3493.1
Wrongful death 1 year from death or 2 years from the injury, whichever is longer La. Civ. Code art. 2315.2

Louisiana uses the term prescription for filing deadlines. For injury claims arising on or after July 1, 2024, the period is two years from the day the injury or damage is sustained (Civil Code art. 3493.1); before that, it was one year. For wrongful death, the period is one year from the death or two years from the day the injury was sustained, whichever is longer (art. 2315.2). Asbestos claims raise questions about when injury is "sustained," so have a Louisiana lawyer check your dates.

Also note: The 2-year personal injury period applies to claims arising on or after July 1, 2024; older claims had 1 year.

Deadlines and discovery rules change and depend on the facts. Confirm them with a lawyer licensed in Louisiana. Compare other states in our national table.

Common questions

Why does Louisiana call it prescription?

Louisiana's civil law system, based on its Civil Code, uses "liberative prescription" for what other states call a statute of limitations. The idea is the same: a deadline to file.

This page is general information, not legal advice. Laws and deadlines differ by state and change; confirm anything that matters with a licensed attorney in your state. No one can promise how a claim will turn out.
